Get Art Active
Our art class event, Get Art Active with ElderActive, is focused on promoting being active in mind and spirit and fostering community through learning art.
We will host/deliver a total of 10 art classes this Fall, with different art mediums and a variety of local artists teaching the classes.
Sept 11th - Donna Milne - Birthday Card Making
Join Donna for a fun and creative card-making class where you’ll create two beautiful birthday cards—one elegant and one whimsical! You’ll learn some fun paper-crafting techniques while creating cards that are ready to give to someone special.
Sept 18th - Janet Patterson - Felted Landscapes
Join Janet Patterson for a beginner-friendly class in needle felting a beautiful landscape in wool. Learn how to use different types of wool and silk to create a small (6” x 4”) art piece that you can proudly display on a wall or give as a gift. All supplies will be provided; you just need to bring your imagination and possibly a reference photo if there is a specific landscape you wish to re-create.
Sept 25th - Helen O’Connor - Watercolour Paper Sketchbook
Make a Pocket Watercolour Sketchbook
Learn to bind a 5”x7” watercolour sketchbook - sewn and built by hand. Participants will learn about paper types, weight and grain, cutting, gluing, as well as stitching to make a unique, 2-signature, hard-covered book ideal for watercolour painting, sketching and journaling.
Oct 2nd - Maddy Simard - Mini Mitten Keychain
Maddy Simard joins us to teach her traditional art form of beading and sewing. Learn the basics of sewing and traditional beadwork to create your very own mini mitten keychain! The keychain is a beaded hide with real fur trimmings.
Oct 9th - Deb Enoch - Fringe Earrings
Join Deb Enoch to create your own unique beaded cone dangle earrings! Complete with an eye pin and threaded seed beads. Various-sized beads can be used to create your own design. Finish it off with a bead cone and earring hooks. A traditional beading project to get your creative juices flowing!
Oct 16 - Rebecca Koser - Spiderweb Embroidery

Oct 23rd - Allison Belshaw - Natural Dyes
In this hands-on natural dyeing workshop, participants will explore how colours and patterns can be created on fabric using natural dyes. We will work with cotton napkins and a selection of prepared natural dye baths, learning some of the basic principles of natural dyeing along the way. Participants will experiment with simple techniques for creating patterns on their fabric, including folding, tying and resist dyeing. Additional techniques for applying natural dyes directly to fabric will also be available for participants who would like to experiment further. Everyone will be able to create their own unique design and take home their naturally dyed cotton napkin at the end of the workshop.
Nov 6th - Josée Fortin - Collage
Josée Fortin joins us to teach the collage art technique. Collage is where you stick different materials like paper, photos, and fabric onto a flat surface to create a new expressive image. The word comes from a French term meaning "to glue." Explore your creative side with this accessible art form.
Nov 13 - Doug Rutherford - Painting a Winter Scene
Doug Rutherford joins us to teach this lovely winter scene. In this workshop, we will consider some of the techniques of painting winter scenes, painting a view of the Richtofen Creek wetlands in winter. This class is a lesson in Watercolour painting.
